PROBLEM
From concept to manufacture, a project to design a container with an open and a closed state. Using lateral thinking to develop a 30 page design proposal portfolio.
SOLUTION
A container featuring an open and a closed state, featuring a 6:1 planetary gear and a bottom rotating part.
The three top components spin out of configuration and back in to configuration when the bottom section of the product is spun.
Manufactured using advanced metal fabrication techniques, 3D printing and wood working techniques. Using a CNC milling machine to create the MDF base, 3D printing the gears and metal cutting the face plate.
With attention to detail, used finishing techniques on the product - jitter blasting the face plate and placing a wood veneer on the bottom MDF board section.
Final Container Proposal
IDEATION
Using inspiration from themes of Nature, Architecture and Kitchen Items. Giving at least three concepts for each theme. Explored themes laterally for creative designs.
DEVELOPMENT
By combining my best ideas in the ideation phase, I was able to make further developments, focusing on mechanisms and form - with more attention to gears.
FINAL DESIGN
Final design representation, exploring materials for final design.
MODELLING AND PROTOTYPING
Testing ideas before manufacture using CAD, 3D printing and card modelling .
MANUFACTURING
Using metal fabrication techniques and 3D printing to manufacture the final design. Working around problems encountered.
