PROBLEM
A project to create a technical report of the key components in a McLaren 650s cylinder head with a particular focus on the materials and manufacturing process of the following 5 components; Camshaft clamp, camshaft, cam follower, cylinder head retention bolt and the cylinder head exhaust manifold.
SOLUTION
Worked in a group to dismantled a McLaren 650s Cylinder Head in order to examine the 5 following components; Camshaft clamp, camshaft, cam follower, cylinder head retention bolt and the cylinder head exhaust manifold. Paying particular attention to the materials, surface finish and stresses the component may experience in service.
Scoped information by using academic literature, textbooks, and proactively contacted a McLaren engineer for further information about each of the parts.
Ultimately, it was found that great care was taken into the materials and manufacture of every part of the cylinder head, investing large amounts of money into expensive processes and finishes for the maximum performance in the engine.
